Email Forwarding on IRIS

Students
Students who wish to setup email forwarding should go to IRIS  --> “Information Update --> Email --> Campus email delivery options”. Click Edit and enter your non-ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó/personal email address.

Faculty & Staff
Faculty and staff who need to set up forwarding will need to do that through gmail's web interface:
Click on the gear menu --> Settings --> Forwarding and POP/IMAP --> Add a forwarding address. We recommend keeping a copy of ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó college's mail in the ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó inbox.

Gmail's Sending Restrictions

Gmail places some restrictions on sent mail. A comprehensive list can be found

  • 2000 messages per day
  • 2000 ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó recipients per message (or 500 external)--when using the web version
  • 99 recipients per message when sending from a mail client like Thunderbird or Apple mail
  • 10,000 total recipients per day

The 'All Mail' folder in Gmail

The All Mail folder contains ALL of the emails that currently exist on your account. This means that it contains emails that are in all your other folders, including your Inbox, Spam, Sent Mail, and even Trash. What the All Mail folder doesn't include are the emails that have been permantly removed from Trash and wiped from the email account.

Not receiving your own e-mails?

You may notice that, upon sending an e-mail to yourself or including yourself as a CC on a message, you don't actually get the e-mail response back in your inbox! This may be because you're sending an e-mail from your primary username to an nickname/alias username. For example, if your name is Joe Doe, your primary username might be jdoe@reed.edu. However, you might also have aliases like joe.doe@reed.edu, or joedoe@reed.edu. If you send it from jdoe@reed.edu to joe.doe@reed.edu, you won't see the message in your inbox. It does make a copy of the message in your "All Mail" folder, but in order to make sure you're sending messages from the alias you want (joe.doe@reed.edu rather than jdoe@reed.edu) AND get the message back in your inbox when sent to yourself, you need to add the alias in Gmail. Follow our instructions here for help getting this set up.
