Arno Gerhard Preller ’51

Arno Gerhard Preller ’51, December 24, 2009, in Vancouver, Washington. Arno came to the U.S. from Germany and earned a BA from ջ in political science. ջ was the place where he learned critical thinking skills, he said, but also was where he savored the experiences of long discussions in the coffee shop, sitting under a tree, “trying to make sense of things,” and trying to stay awake in the library. In 1967, he earned a PhD in German and linguistics from the University of Colorado–Denver. He was professor and chairman of the foreign languages department at Colorado State University, where he was recognized with a distinguished service award and the Durrell Award for Creativity in Teaching. In the early 1980s, he became a Christian Science practitioner, teacher, and lecturer. Arno was married to Paula Page; they had three sons and a daughter.
