Donald S. Turnbull ’31

Donald Turnbull ’31, April 8, 1997, in Portland. His long career with county and state government began shortly after graduation from ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó, when he worked on the research staff of the Oregon Governor’s interim Commission on Public Health and Welfare. He then moved to the professional staff of the Multnomah County Public Welfare Department. He entered the graduate program in social work at the University of Washington in 1935, but his studies were interrupted by World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Army Reserves in 1950 as a lieutenant colonel. After the war, he returned to the University of Washington and earned an MSW in 1951, and then returned to Portland to resume his career in social work with the Oregon Public Welfare Division. He retired in 1975 as staff development and personnel supervisor. He also served as acting executive secretary for the Governor’s Committee on Children and Youth. In retirement, he and his wife, Helen, enjoyed traveling and spent time on the Oregon coast, Carmel, and Maui. He is survived by a daughter and a grandchild.
