Alexis B. Long ’65

A weather modification scientist and educator, Alex was the valedictorian of his high school class in El Cajon, California. At ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó, he majored in physics and wrote his thesis, “Fluid Flow over a Ridge,” with Prof. William Parker [physics 1948–79] advising. He went on to get a master’s from Syracuse University and a PhD in atmospheric sciences from the University of Arizona. He then had a postdoctorate fellowship with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia. Alex worked as a research associate at the University of Colorado, and was the design and evaluation group head at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, both in Boulder. He returned to Australia, where he was the principal research scientist in the division of atmospheric research at CSIRO. He was then an associate professor at the Atmospheric Science in Reno, Nevada. He and his wife, Loretto, had three children, Leonora, Andrew, and Louisa, and had lived in Australia for the last 30 years.
